Volunteer

Find out how you can volunteer with PORCH Hillsborough by participating in a monthly neighborhood food drive, or through one of our other programs that serve Hillsborough and the northern Orange County community.

Neighborhood Coordinator

Once a month, neighborhood coordinators remind their community of the monthly PORCH pick-up date, collect donations from their neighbors’ porches, and deliver the donations to the OCIM Pantry or the Orange County Schools Central Pantry. This volunteer role requires a time commitment of only a couple of hours per month but provides a considerable service to our local food pantries.

To become a Neighborhood Coordinator, email Nancy Grebenkemper.

Orange County Schools Pantry Volunteer

The PORCH-OCS Pantry partnership puts 100-150 boxes of food per month on the tables of school families in need. Food donations come directly from PORCH Hillsborough neighborhoods and local businesses. Volunteer jobs include receiving, weighing and sorting donations, packing food boxes, and moving boxes to the distribution point outside.

To volunteer in the OCS Pantry, contact Meaghun Darab.

Food Distribution Volunteer

PORCH sponsors and/or manages three public food distributions per month, generally on the third Thursday and fourth Friday mornings. Volunteers help sort food, pack it into boxes, and load it into cars. All work is done outside (rain or shine), and all volunteers wear masks. Helpers with a truck or trailer and Spanish language skills are especially needed.

Food for Schools Volunteer

Children affected by hunger have trouble focusing during the school day and have more social and behavioral problems.  Our Food for Schools program helps provide hungry students with nutritious, brain-boosting snacks so they can concentrate on learning without feeling hungry.  Our program works in collaboration with the schools’ social workers to serve the 13 Orange County public schools and the local Head Start program.  This initiative is funded by donations from local businesses and benefactors.

Help our Food for Schools team with fundraising to finance the program, and/or help with the purchase and delivery of snack food. We could use assistance with the following:

  • Contacting area businesses and organizations to ask for donations to sponsor schools.
  • Volunteers with large vehicles to assist delivering snacks to Cedar Ridge High School twice/year.
