Our Impact
In 2021, we collected almost 28 tons of food and over $27,000 in cash donations. One small donation at a time, together we can make a big difference in feeding the hungry in our communities.
PORCH Brunswick Forest is an all-volunteer, grassroots hunger relief organization. We collect food and cash donations through monthly neighborhood food drives and deliver the contributions to food pantries who provide emergency food to individuals and families in our area.
We held our first food drive in January 2020 in the Shelmore neighborhood of Brunswick Forest in Leland, NC, and have grown since then. Our recipient organizations include Brunswick Family Assistance, Brunswick Senior Resources Inc., Hope Harbor Home, Manna Ministries, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Town Creek and Lincoln Elementary Schools, and the Brunswick Community College pantry.
The PORCH collection model simplifies the donation process as it brings the food drive to your neighborhood. We are currently holding food drives on the 4th Friday of the month (except in November and December when it is the 3rd Friday).
This month, we highlight “The Lakes”
Noreen Dalton, Susan Amorusi, and Maria Dowd – Coordinators
Susan and Noreen were approached in 2020 to see if they were interested in participation to this wonderful endeavor. They agreed and started collections January of 2021. This year started with a new neighbor, Maria Dowd, and they are very fortunate to have her on board.
At First, we just went door to door with a flyer about PORCH and inquired about interest. We put together a monthly newsletter and only included those neighbors that expressed interest in donation. At that time, our neighborhood was relatively small so amount collected reflected that. Right now, The Lakes is almost completely finished. We currently are informing any new neighbors about this organization and they need to respond with interest in donation. We add them to our monthly newsletter.
We provide food to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard.
We really have a fantastic community here and neighbors who like to get involved in projects. I think being a new community has helped with our success as getting involved is a great way to get to know your neighbors. We always inform those that donation is not mandatory to do each month – people are so involved in other things and some friends volunteer with other great organizations. We never want this to feel like a commitment.
One fun project one of our neighbors initiated was a “football pool” for the Superbowl. Half of the winnings went to PORCH- total of $270.00

PORCH is built around the very simple idea of a neighborhood food drive. Here’s how it works:
Be a neighborhood coordinator – Coordinate and/or host a monthly food drive at your house. Email neighbors and post on your neighborhood social media about the collection and items needed by the partner pantry. Then, take the donated items to your designated food pantry.
Donate food – Contact us and we will let you know if there is a coordinator in your neighborhood or where the closest drop-off location is that month.
