PORCH Burlington is an all-volunteer, grassroots hunger relief organization. We collect food and cash donations through monthly neighborhood food drives, and then distribute food to hundreds of at-risk families in our community with the help of local food banks.

We started as a group of mothers who gathered regularly for playdates, but found a strong bond between us that eventually led us to serve our community together. We have various backgrounds in small business, psychology, and education. As parents, we’ve seen firsthand how essential meals and snacks are for healthy development. Food security is not only important for physical growth, but also for mental health.

We first learned of PORCH, (People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill Carrboro Homes) and its successes as a grass-roots hunger-relief program in April of 2021, and knew immediately that we wanted to expand their already strong support system to Burlington. With a proven track record of over a decade, this program is proven and empowering on a local level.

We have already seen the generous spirit of our Burlington neighbors and this seems like a great way to bring giving individuals together to make a larger impact. This town has a lot to offer and just the heart to make a program like this work. It is encouraging to see such a strong response already. We are excited to launch in Mackintosh and expand to new neighborhoods this year.

Now, as our collections and donor lists grow so do our goals and our commitment. We would love to have volunteers and donors from every neighborhood in Burlington. We’d love to expand to multiple food pantries across the city.

So, please join us and enjoy the impact we can make TOGETHER!

We are excited to have you on board!

How PORCH Works

PORCH is built around the very simple idea of a neighborhood food drive. Here’s how it works, in three easy steps:

Once a month, on a designated day, residents place a food donation of individual sized-portions on their front porch.

A volunteer neighborhood coordinator goes porch to porch and picks up the food donations.

The donated food is transported by car to a central location where it is sorted, packed and then delivered to Bread of Life Food Bank at Harvest Baptist.

The three-step process is easy and it’s also efficient. With the help of dedicated volunteers, all the food collected from the many neighborhood food drives moves from porch to pantries in just a few hours’ time. From there, it goes to individuals and families who struggle with food insecurity.
